Silly Niblets

Current mood: weird
Category: Dreams and the Supernatural

I'm not sure what point this is illustrating, far be it from me to understand myself.
I'm chasing the thoughts and I'm too slow to catch up.
I'm getting frustrated being in a funk.
This always happens to me,
people find the right one and
are content to go with what they know
will be right. I, on the other hand, always seem to get
caught up in something that I can't do anything about, the grass is always greener.

I'm always the one sabotaging the things that go well for me and have gone well for me
I've always seemed to fall in to the pattern of sticking with unhealthy things
people will use the phrase "self-destruction" like you'd play catch
with a baseball. It's not about anyone specific,
it's more or less just using something specific
to describe something that is a little broader in scope I suppose.
When you are on the verge of starting a journey in your life with a supposed
beginning and end, you try to set abstract ideas in a more linear way which is unsettling.

I guess I've never been the best at sorting why I am the way I am in a constructive
manner. I've always tried little remedies and such, but
they always seem to detonate in my face.
Most days I feel like I'm sort
of floating through life with
no real sense of purpose, I know that most
people experience this to some degree, however when
your life feels like it passes you by like a dream, it's hard to say what is right and wrong.

The concept of time is a funny thing, what do you relate it to? If anything, I certainly
don't do a very good job of that. Most memories and ideas and recalling
of events are skewed by what I want to believe, or
if I've told myself a given situation has turned
out a certain way, I'll begin to believe it. So,
how exactly do I equate skewed thoughts and make
any sense of them and apply them to my life now? That's a good question
and it's a thought that is present, often. It rolls around in my head like cloths in a dryer.

I know the way this page is constructed might be a little gimmicky, but I'm trying
to let go of the normal thought process I normally attempt
to commit myself to when I write in my blog.
I wouldn't expect too many kinds
of entries like this, it's not always me.
Writing is a comfort, of course you know how they
say to "get out of your comfort zone?" With me being very

OCD, this is very much outside of what I'm like. It's awkward for me to type like this and not have the lines sync up exactly. There is a pattern to all of this and that's what must end.

I'll admit...I was a little confused reading this one. I actually thought it was some kind of gangsta rap that you wrote and I was trying to put it all to my righteous beat box. It didn't work. Then, I got to the end and saw what music you were listening to. It all makes sense now.

Sometimes when people write, the will say something specific to encompass something that is broad to make it easier to write/read. It's about nothing really. Just trying to do something different and see where it takes me.

Missouri Zach: In the Adventure of Pre-Marriage Activity

Current mood: rejuvenated
Category: Life

This weekend was quite eventful. I kept fairly busy throughout and that's how I like to keep it. When I have an active weekend it usually bodes well for an active and productive work week. The Boston Red Sox sweeping the San Francisco Giants didn't hurt either.

Friday night after work Stephanie and I headed out to Kauffman Stadium in KC to see the Royals in action against the Florida Marlins. It was our second inter-league game in two weeks and also our second Royals win in the past two weeks. For her childhood and adult life, Stephanie had never seen a Royals win despite being to many a game and living in KC all her life. Two Fridays ago that streak was broken against the Philadelphia Phillies and a new streak began last Friday against the Marlins.

We met my friend John, his girlfriend and kid at a Wal-Mart parking lot an exit away from the Sports Complex. Parking is $9 and we wanted to save every available dollar for buck night. For those that are unaware, buck night is where stadium hot dogs, peanuts, and pop are all $1. All the money that was saved on parking and cheap dogs and nuts went immediately to beer. Our beverage of choice was not in short supply that night. Now, when you are not accustomed to drinking mass quantities of beer (not anymore, anyway) and hot dogs, the next day can be a little dicey. Saturday morning I felt like half a dog was still lodged in my chest, I talked to John and he was pretty much in the same position as me. Let this be a lesson kids, when going to a buck night in your respective baseball city, make sure to use the previous two to three weeks for conditioning.

I had to go in to work for a few hours Saturday morning. Nothing too exciting about this, other than after I got off work I stopped by Subway and made my way home to catch the recording of Friday night's game between the Sox and Giants. I couldn't stay holed up in my apartment for long, as the future Mrs. S beckoned to go look at wedding invitations. Now, to all my bachelor friends out there, be aware that when you get married and are picking out invitations to your respective weddings that it's more than just picking out the invite. You have to take into account font, color, designs, and a verse for the invitation. Then, you have to decide if you want inner envelopes, which are extra of course. Then you have to decide if you want colored liners for the outer envelope, reception cards, and thank you cards and so on. So, be ready.

When we arrived at the wedding store, I assumed there would be a few books with designs of invitations in them. How wrong I was. There were no less than 30 giant binders with all different sorts of invitation designs in them. Of course, the variety that I liked best were a little out of our price range that were ranging anywhere from $500-$700 for 150 pieces, and that was just for the invitation, not including anything I listed above that is "extra." The store owner was sure to let us know that there were a half a million combinations in the establishment. Yikes. We finally decided on a design and to the best of my knowledge we are sticking with it. Check with my better half if you truly want to stay updated on the status of our wedding invitations.

Saturday night was nice, my fiancé and I traveled up north to Zona Rosa (outdoor shopping center in KC) to eat at Bo Lings, our favorite Chinese restaurant. We always order the same thing and never finish. We always discuss the idea of just placing one order of General Tso's chicken, it's just when you're in a Chinese restaurant your eyes are much bigger than your stomach. After dinner we just retired to Stephanie's and drank something that was like a margarita for the duration. You'll have to check with Steph on the specifics of the contents of what she made. Then in initiated her into the world of Southpark The Movie. I'm sure most of my readers have seen it, however I positioned it to her as part comedy, part musical. She did know that the score was nominated for an Oscar in 2000. As much as she does not want to admit it, she is becoming a bona fide Southpark fan.

With yesterday being Father's Day, a holiday that the company Stephanie works for invented, we spent a majority of the day with her family. The rest of the day consisted of talking to my friend Jason, doing laundry, and watching the final episode of "The Price Is Right." I ran home quick to get ready for the day and grab my laundry and made it back to Stephanie's in time to get most of my clothes done before we left for her Grandfather's house. I watched a little Formula One racing, which I am slowly getting addicted to. I'm starting to like all kinds of motor sports lately and I'm not sure why. Stephanie made my favorite kind of brownies for desert also. Have you ever had the chocolate with Jif Peanut Butter brownies? Good God they should be illegal.

Anyway, time with Stephanie's Dads and Mothers side of the family was anything and everything you could expect. It's summer, so we had fried chicken with sides and a wide array of deserts. Stephanie's Grandfather (on her Dad's side) got a Laz-y-boy from his kids, which he promptly told the entire housefull of people to take back. I guess he does this a lot. Stephanie's Dads family is Italian, so I feel right at home when I'm over there. Stephanie's Moms side of the family is also part Italian, however they seem to be missing the element that makes Italian family events chaotic, so that leg of the journey was relatively quiet. They had just purchased a new refridgerator. It was big and black. Exciting.

Afterwards we hung out at Stephanie's apartment again, she took a nap while I ravaged iTunes and Google to find a Rolling Stones song that I could not remember the title to for the life of me. After she woke up we stopped at my place for a bit and then went to Sonic and had burgers for dinner. Stephanie said she was craving them and when she is craving something, we usually partake. I've always been scared when a woman uses the phrase "I've been craving…" in a sentence because the stereotypical thought is that is a precursor to finding out said woman is pregnant. After I dismissed that as nonsense, we went back to watch last weeks episode of "How I Met Your Mother" and "The Price Is Right." It's sad to see Bob Barker getting old. He's like the Dick Clark of game show hosts, he's supposed to live forever.

After I took Stephanie home I came back to my apartment and adjusted the look of my sports blogs, read for a little while and retired for the day. There my friends, is an exclusive look into the exciting weekend of a pre-married man. Hope you enjoyed yourself, because I sure did.

Blast From The Past...Part One

Current mood: silly
Category: MySpace

I want to do something different. Something that I haven't seen anyone else do, even though I'm quite sure that someone else has thought of it. Since I don't know them personally, and since I'm sure you don't either, I'm going to do a "Where Are They Now" through the magic of MySpace. I have no rhyme or reason for how I pick the subjects, other than they have to be from the relative past and have to have a MySpace page.

Today's subject is from the popular MTV reality series, "The Real World." Everyone my age knows about this show, maybe you're an avid follower of the series, or maybe you're more like me and stopped watching it after the fourth or fifth season. By the time I got to high school I sort of thought the show was dumb. So, the first person in this series is from the original New York cast. He was more or less my favorite person on the show, and that was Andre. He didn't talk a lot of shit and didn't really care too much to hang out with the other cast. He didn't take it seriously at all, which I thought was cool when I was 12.

So here is Andre Comeau in all his post Real World glory. Remember how he used to be in sort of a grunge-type band? Well, he's traded in the flannel for overalls and a cowboy hat. He's now playing acoustic indie folk! At least that's what the MySpace page says. So, here you are, your Blast From The Past, Andre Comeau!

It's not a survey, but I refuse to put it up as a bulletin anyway. I'm sort of opposed to using it, and I'm not saying that to discourage others from putting up a bulletin. It's just not me. So, again it's not a survey but it's sort of like it. Today's exercise is to construct the soundtrack of my life. Uptown Boy

Current mood: tired
Category: Music

Last night I attended a packed concert in Kansas City at the Uptown Theater. On tap for last nights performance is a band that many veterans of this blog know to be one of my favorite new bands. That band I'm referring to of course is Bloc Party.

I'm not going to mention the first opening act because I don't remember their name. They are a band that sounded sort of like Bloc Party, if Bloc Party sucked. My fiancé pointed out that the bass player looked out of place because he had short hair and was tall. It was almost like he had just come from basketball practice. I know I'm being harsh, so I'll say that they were ok and the sounded one dimensional. You know those bands that open at concerts, all their songs generally song like one long song during their set.

The next opening act has a little more notoriety than the first no-name band. The Noisettes are another band from the U.K. and displayed a little more musical fortitude than the previous band. I had heard of them and read some articles and interviews, but never listened to any of their material. They played the Coachella Music Festival this year and have been on Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show on CBS. At first, I thought they were a little gimmicky with the band's lead singer, Shingai Shoniwa, coming out in a mohawk and neon green lycra and spitting water out like Gene Simmons spits blood. The actual music is straight forward rocky-type music with a puck attitude. I've always had an affection for power trio bands so I was optimistic as the set was unfolding. The band played for about 35 minutes, entertained me and scared my fiancé. They didn't sound polished live, so I'm interested in picking up some of their music to hear their recorded work. After all, that is the point of touring to generate interest in your music no?

After both bands had finished their sets and another long sound check took place, the headliners took the stage. Bloc Party is a very tight band on stage and did not deviate from the sound and feel of their recordings. They didn't waste a lot of time throwing any curveballs at the audience and the crowd, made up of mostly hardcore fans, seemed to appreciate this. Most of the set list comprised of songs from both of their full length albums. They played with a great deal of energy and seemed to thrive off of the audience participation that lead singer and primary song writer Kele Okereke induced. My companion said he "sure is a big fan of rhythmic clapping and jazz hands." That's why I'm marrying this girl.

One thing I noticed while watching the whole affair from my seat in the balcony* is that their songs contain more hooks than your grandfather's tackle box. These guys from London know how to write great pop music that is legitimate enough to be appreciated by indie-rock fans and lovers of good music. You can hear the influences they pull from and I have discovered over the past few years I related to the music immediately because those influences are rooted in the time period that I grew up and came of age in. It is interesting to listen to bands that are peers on an age level and pick out how they have certain flavors to their music that are easily recognizable.

The fifth member (there are four members of Bloc Party) of the performance was definitely the "light show" that was going on behind the band. It was synced up to the music which put a stamp on the music that was being performed. It's not like it was a Pink Floyd laser light show or anything, but it was still interesting. There were 8 bars (that lit up with different colors) that made sort of an upside down 'U' and only the two on the outside did not have floodlights fixated on the top and bottom, two lights per side. Behind the drum riser they had two colored strobe lights that looked like oversized air vents. Very entertaining. However, if you were epileptic, you'd be up shit creek without a paddle. I love little eccentricities (or larger ones) that add to the performance of competent musicians that know how to put on a show.

I would see them again if they come back to Kansas City. Given their following and potential after their first two LP's, I would imagine that will be soon. If they come near you I would definitely recommend seeing them live. So, Erin if you read this before tonight get down to the Ogden Theatre in Denver to catch them and take in a show. They won't let you down, I promise.

*I've probably seen hundreds of shows in my day, and I've spent my fair share of time up front battling people near the stage. Now that I'm old and Stephanie hates the smell of BO and pot, I spend most of my time enjoying concerts from the comfort of my seat. Don't try to make fun of me, because my feelings get hurt easily.

SuperTruth!

Current mood: working
Category: News and Politics

Lunch at noon is always an interesting proposition. The former cop and former FBI agent I work with always eat at noon so they can watch the news. The reason the news is on at noon in our break room is only because there is a lapse in soap operas that all the ladies (and some men) watch in our office. Honestly, from 11AM until 3PM, when Dr. Phil comes on, nothing but fucking soap operas. Maybe the occasional courtroom show, like Judge Judy. Why is lunch at noon in my break room interesting? It's because of the former cop, who we'll call Barbrady and the former FBI agent we'll refer to as Hoover mixed with yours truly.

The news in Kansas City generally shifts from local news, then to national/world news, and then to the weather, in that order. Local news wasn't the topic of choice today amongst employees (as opposed to last week), it pertained to what is taking place in the world. As you might be able to gather, the two retired law enforcement representatives are largely conservative, Barbrady more so than Hoover. I'll just come out and say that the discussion was on the war in Iraq and how it is perceived. It is a topic that is not easily avoided now days.

The complaint from Barbrady and Hoover was that the media only focuses on the negative stories that come out of the Middle East. I agree, however only to a certain extent. I believe that America as a society in general is unable to pay attention to anything that doesn't hit them over the head like a two ton weight. Death, violence, and chaos sell very well to the American public and we do not come up short in the currency we spend on stories that involve much sensationalism. We also take our news and cultural phenomenon's in massive doses. Take for example the show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire!" Remember when that show was on four times a week? America couldn't get enough of it. We had to have it almost everyday. Then what happened? People consumed it until they overdosed on it and threw it away. We take things in at an alarming rate until we are saturated and fat from any particular trend. Then when we tire of it and "get sick of it" or something becomes "so 2006" we throw it out like trash.

Back to my story…

My Republican colleagues questioned the news anchor (who was on the TV, not in the room) why stories that are positive are not portrayed in the news. Hoover enlightened me to a story about how power is being restored in a neighborhood in Baghdad and children are now being allowed back in to school. I agree, more stories like this one should share airtime with negative aspects of the war. However, they did not stop there. The tone they perpetuated was more along the lines of all news should only focus on the positive, and none of the negative. This was my primary concern, I countered that having an opinion on events in the world requires hearing and seeing both sides of the story. Having only positive stories on the war (or any other critical issue) are just as damaging as only running stories and giving airtime to events that are 100% negative. If all stories are positive you gain a false sense of security and believe that everything we are doing is right and just. This sets a very detrimental precedent. It allows you to not question anything, makes you ignorant, and gives you a false sense of security. I believe this to be a fault of some people that grew up in the 50's (as did these men). A utopian society was almost achieved, remember? "The good old days" as most people will refer to them. You know, when women were discouraged to work outside the home and minorities were still discriminated against and segregated from our society? You remember, right? Back when things were right and you felt safe, as both of them say so often.

Barbrady made the quote that "If I were king, the only stories on the war would be positive ones." This proclamation of King Barbrady was very unsettling to me. I came up with an analogy on the fly, likening his statement regarding media coverage on the war to that of a husband who beats his wife and kids but keeps a squeaky clean public image by always paying his taxes, being involved in the PTA and going to church every Sunday. "Wouldn't you want to know of his domestic abuse against his family?" I said. "Being a man of faith, and a former keeper of the peace, aren't you sworn to uphold the rights of those whose rights are being impeded upon? To serve and protect, right?" I was not surprised with the fact that the would-be king had nothing to say about my hypothetical comparison, nor would he have anything to say when I questioned how deep his convictions truly are. Or maybe he was just embarrassed that I pointed out the contradiction in his decree, if he were king.

The second item, and more disturbing of the two to me, was the idea and concept of opinion. As I was explaining to Hoover that what people should be doing in this country is taking into account both sides of what is going on in Iraq and weigh one against the other. You take stories like the one above about Iraqi schoolchildren returning to their education and set that against the backdrop of troops dying every day. You have to ask yourself, is this worth it? Before any intelligent conversation could take place, Barbrady undercut the value of opinions and fell back on his ability to use every clichéd line under the sun. Something about how "opinions are like armpits, everyone has two and they usually stink." Thanks Barbrady, don't use your own thought process to your advantage to draw your own conclusions. I understand that for a conservative, retired police officer that critical thinking isn't something he is accustomed to, but to say that opinions do not matter is just plain ignorant.

As soon as the weather can change on a Kansas City summer day the news changed to the weather as did the conversation. I'm pretty sure I upset them to a certain degree and I'm fine with that. Censoring opinion is all about what political pundicy (I believe I just created a word) is aimed towards achieving. Rush Limbaugh, Mike Savage, Sean Hannity. These men don't want you to have your own opinion, they want you to have their opinion and spread it. They don't want to reveal any truth, they want you all to think the same. I believe both of these former members of our law enforcement community spend entirely too much time doing just that. Whenever they start a discussion with me (because they know I lean left) it usually ends like the situation I listed above. In all of these said conversations it feels like I'm talking to pundits like Hannity or Limbaugh. Rush calls his listeners and fans "dittoheads" for Christ sake. The same arguments and proclamations that come out of the pundit's mouths come out of the mouths of people like Hoover and Barbrady. Unable to strike an opinion of their own from their own thought process brought on by being unbiased in research and the collecting of information. They are content to have their opinions spoon fed to them, so they can regurgitate them on anyone who will listen. It is a sad state of affairs when someone will lead their life and cast their vote based on TV, newspaper, or internet personalities whose only concern is their own bottom line. But hey, that's the "American Way" right?
