Just to show that I am not a fair weather fan, I will be tracking my favorite NFL team's progress over the course of the 2006 season. This year gives me a lot of reason to believe that my team, the San Fransisco 49ers are on the road to recovery and can somehow recover from the debacle the last few seasons that are like none I have ever witnessed in my career (20+ years) as a Niners guy. It's no small task coming back from the York family taking over and handing the reigns to Terry Donahue after the fruitful Carmen Policy years.
Let me say first that I think Mike Nolan is a great coach for the average age of my team, which is obviously young. I had always questioned the ability of the veterans response to his coaching. However, after two showings this year I am happy to see that things in San Fran are going over quite well.
I was at Granite City in Sioux Falls for the season opener against the upstart Arizona Cardinals, and dispite being on the road, which the new Niners are notoriously poor at, they showed a lot in the first loss of the season. They didn't look inept like last year or helpless. Frank Gore showed flashes of brilliance, as did rookie tight end Vernon Davis. However, he did show signs of being a rookie also. Of course the young defense looked hard pressed to keep up with a top notch receiving core and veteran quarterback and one time NFL MVP Kurt Warner, but did show signs of life in third down situations which have plagued my team for years.
This weekend I was unable to see the first victory of the year for my team, as I was watching my girlfriends team, the Kansas City Chiefs. But from what I've read online, Alex Smith was solid, as were Gore and off season aquisition Antionio Bryant. The defense was decent enough to keep the Rams receiver's out of the endzone also, which is rare considering that the Isaac Bruce/Tory Holt combo is a sure bet to torch the 49er secondary on Sunday.
Next week is another home game, however it's against a much improved Philadelphia Eagles squad. Of course the week after will be a huge highlight for me as San Fransisco will be in my new home town of Kansas City to play the Cheifs. Look for the guy in the white Ronnie Lott jersey under the scoreboard. Hopefully I can make it out of Arrowhead alive!
